On October 14, 2026, the state association Belarusian Railway and RUE Beltelecom entered into a cooperation agreement. The document was signed by Valery Verenich, Head of the Belarusian Railway state association, and Aliaksandr Kenda, Director General of RUE Beltelecom.
The agreement establishes long-term cooperation aimed at enhancing safety at railway crossings through the implementation of additional safety systems. It is symbolic that it was signed in a year dedicated to improving operational technologies on the Belarusian Railway.
The Belarusian railway network operates 66 crossings with limited visibility, located on curved sections of track where trains travel at speeds above 100 km/h. If a car, agricultural machinery or another object is on a crossing, a locomotive crew has critically little time to prevent a collision.
The risks of accidents can be reduced through early detection of foreign objects and other emergencies at crossings. For this purpose, it is necessary to ensure automated monitoring of the road situation in the areas of these railway crossings.
Belarusian Railway specialists had previously examined six different technologies for detecting the presence of objects at crossings and transmitting notifications to locomotive cabs. The specialists studied advanced domestic and international solutions.
Modern video analytics systems based on technological solutions from Beltelecom and technical systems from Belarusian Railway will help improve safety.
The safety system jointly implemented by Belarusian Railway and Beltelecom will detect the presence of people, animals, and vehicles via video surveillance cameras and automatically send messages via railway radio to drivers who are up to 3km away from the crossing.
The implementation of the joint project is scheduled for 2027.
